A Leader, A Fighter, A Friend
Born and raised in Acres Homes, a historically Black community in northwest Houston, Turner understood firsthand the challenges that many in our city faced. He carried that understanding with him throughout his career, which could have been seen early on when he became the Speaker of the Student Senate at the University of Houston. He later earned his Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School. With his budding passion for service, returning home to fight for the people who needed him most.
Protecting the Rights of Others
For over 25 years in the Texas House of Representatives, Turner was a relentless advocate for working families, consumers, and those without a voice. He fought against predatory corporate practices, championed policies to protect homeowners, and worked to hold utility companies accountable. One of his many legislative efforts included voting to restructure Texas’ electric utility industry in 1999, giving consumers more choice and preventing price gouging.
As Mayor of Houston, Turner faced some of the city’s greatest challenges with resilience and leadership. He led the city through Hurricane Harvey, spearheading recovery efforts and ensuring relief reached those who needed it most. He championed programs to protect vulnerable communities, fought to improve infrastructure, and prioritized affordable housing and economic growth. His leadership was always centered on lifting people up, ensuring fairness, and making Houston a city where everyone had a chance to thrive.
Honoring a Legacy
At our firm, we know that justice is about standing up for what’s right, holding powerful entities accountable, and making a difference in people’s lives. That’s exactly what Sylvester Turner did. His legacy is one of service, strength, and an unyielding commitment to the people of Houston and beyond. In reflecting back on his many years of friendship with Representative Turner, Rand Nolen remembered him as an engaging, friendly, and sincere individual, the rare politician who was always ready, willing, and able to discuss the intricacies of public policy no matter the occasion or where he was – in his office, at a political function, or even at a purely social event.
Today, we mourn the loss of a remarkable leader, but we also celebrate the life and impact of a man who dedicated everything to the fight for justice. Rest in peace, Representative Turner. Your work will not be forgotten.
